Weight Loss Drug May Potentially Increase Risks for Cancer
An FDA study released in February 2020 indicated that Belviq users were more likely to develop pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer, or lung cancer after a 5-year study. Over 12,000 patients participated in this study. However, it is important to note that the FDA did not say that lorcaserin definitively contributes to cancer risk or was a direct cause of cancer. Instead, the purpose of the study result was to make the public aware of a potential risk identified in the study itself.
Lorcaserin (brand name Belviq) was first approved in 2012 for patients needing assistance with weight loss. Pre-FDA approval studies suggested a link between increased cancer risks in laboratory animals. The manufacturer represented that there would not be an increased risk of cancer in humans. The study above was ordered by the FDA in response.
The FDA ordered the manufacturer of Belviq to pull the drug from the marketplace. The FDA also advised patients to stop using Belviq and Belviq XR immediately and to seek alternative weight loss options from their doctors.
Belviq Lawsuits
A New York plaintiff filed a class action lawsuit against Eisai, Arena Pharmaceuticals, and CVS Pharmacy in March 2020. The lawsuit alleges that the FDA originally disapproved Belviq’s application for approval in the United States. The lawsuit claims breach of implied warranty, deceptive and unfair trade practice violations, false advertising, unjust enrichment, and fraud.
