A car accident sends three people by ambulance to the hospital in Lakeland, Florida. One of the injured persons is in serious condition. Conservation Of Momentum In Head-On Collisions

A head-on collision is a serious situation often results in serious injury when the occur. As we all know, a typical car weighs between 3,000 and 4,000 lbs. When an accident occurs, the laws of conservation of momentum tell us that the forces can be tremendous.

The Ledger reports that the white Toyota clipped the back of a Chevy Colorado and went through the bushes on South Florida Avenue before striking the gold Ford Taurus head on. I notice that the Toyota is facing the correct direction on the roadway. This means that the impact caused a 180 degree spin of the vehicles.

Definition Of Negligence In Florida

This accident appears to be the result of negligence of the driver who originally impacted the truck. Florida Standard Civil Jury Instructions (401.4) define “negligence” as:

…the failure to use reasonable care, which is the care that a reasonably careful person would use under like circumstances. Negligence is doing something that a reasonably careful person would not do under like circumstances or failing to do something that a reasonably careful person would do under like circumstances.

This definition is important to mention because it is the actual legal standard used in Florida’s courtrooms when there is a lawsuit over a car accident such as this one. A jury of six members of the community decides whether the person being sued is to be held legally responsible (a/k/a negligent) for causing the collision. If the person being sued is found to be negligent, then the jury moves on to decide the issue of damages. While not immediately apparent, many injuries from car accidents are permanent and people injured have to live with a changed reality for many years or a lifetime.
